The annual
London Turkish Film Festival celebrated its eighth year by
showing more films than before, expanding to two weeks, and
also including other London and regional cinemas for the first
time. Once again it provided London's Turkish speaking community
and cinema-goers in general with a chance to see the best
new Turkish films.
This
year's festival included:
-
Atif
Yilmaz's AFTER THE FALL, the poignant story of a
childhood spent in the aftermath of the military coup of
12 September 1980.
- Halit
Refig's '60s classic BIRDS OF EXILE about migration
from the provinces to Istanbul and the contrast between
the two different worlds.
- Gursel
Ates & Yasar Guner's BORDER, a tense drama about
a group of students who try to help the survivors of the
1998 Northern Iraq Halepce massacre, but are caught up in
the conflict.
- Gani
Mujde's BYZANTIUM, a hilarious pastiche of the traditional
historical epic and a huge box office hit in Turkey.
- Nuri
Bilge Ceylan's CLOUDS OF MAY, a beautiful, humorous
and subtle biographical film in which a film director tries
to persuade his family and friends to participate in a film
about life in the countryside. Winner of this year's European
Film Critics Award - Prix FIPRESCI.
- Mustafa
Altioklar's ELEVATOR, a fantasy thriller in which
a media personality is imprisoned in a lift.
- Omer
Vargi's EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE GREAT, a popular comedy
thriller starring two of Turkey's most popular entertainers,
singer Mazhar Alanson, and stand-up comedian Cem Yilmaz.
- Reha
Erdem's RUN FOR MONEY, an entertaining black comedy
about the insidious power of money.
- Zeki
Demirkubuz's THE THIRD PAGE, an intriguing Kafkaesque
drama concerning a television extra who becomes involved
in murder.
- Ismail
Gunes' WHERE THE ROSE WILTED, the powerful story
of a young man's life in the aftermath of imprisonment and
torture.
- Two
road movies made by young German Turkish film makers, Fatih
Akin's second feature IN JULY and Ayse Polat's first
feature TOUR ABROAD.
- Two
programmes of short and low budget independent film and
videos. The highlight of the second programme on Saturday
16 December is a low budget feature film THE OUTCAST
shot in the East End by local independent film maker, Kenan
Hudaverdi.
We also
welcomed to the festival: Hatice Ayten (director PEOPLE
ON THE STEPS), Gani Mujde (director BYZANTIUM), Ayse
Polat (director TOUR ABROAD) and Halit Refig (director
BIRDS OF EXILE).
Three
films, CLOUDS OF MAY, RUN FOR MONEY and THE THIRD
PAGE will also be shown at other cinemas including the
Tricycle Cinema in Kilburn on the weekend of 16/17 December
and Edinburgh Filmhouse, Riverside Studios Hammersmith, Bristol
Watershed, Oxford Phoenix Picture House and Cambridge Arts
Picture House in January and February. See Festival on Tour
for more information.
The
festival received funding support from the British Film
Institute and the London Film and Development Agency.
