COCO CHANEL & IGOR STRAVINSKY (15)

(France 2009) dir. Jan Kounen 119m. Subtitles. Digital.
Mads Mikkelsen, Anna Mouglalis, Elena Morozova, Natcha Lindinger.

The story continues. Opening with a recreation of the notoriously rancorous premiere of Stravinky’s ‘Rite of Spring’, COCO AND IGOR follows the brief but passionate relationship between the radical composer and the fashion icon. Seven years later Stravinsky is now penniless when the newly-wealthy Chanel invites him, his sick wife and their four children to stay at her villa – their ensuing affair already inevitable. The performances of Anna Mouglalis (Juliette Greco in GAINSBOURG) and Mads Mikkelsen make this a confident and absorbing look at two of the twentieth century's most celebrated cultural figures.top

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (12A)

(US 2010) dir. David Fincher 120m. Digital.
Jessie Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, Rashida Jones, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, Joseph Mazzello.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK: modern success story or modern tragedy? Computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg created the global social network phenomenon Facebook at the age of 22 and went from Harvard student to billionaire in less than a year. But of course, you don't get to make 500 million friends without making a few enemies... Based on Ben Mezrich's book 'The Accidental Billionaires', it’s a story about greed, obsession and misplaced beliefs. With a superb screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, a top flight ensemble cast and David Fincher's dark and stylish direction, it’s also unpredictable, funny, touching and sad.top

THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT (15)

(US 2010) dir. Lisa Cholodenko 106m. Digital.
Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutchinson.

Mid-life crisis with a twist. Lesbian couple Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) have been together for nearly 20 years and have two teenage kids by artificial insemination. Now the kids want to meet their biological father... The anonymous donor turns out to be Paul (Mark Ruffalo) a laid-back entrepreneur and organic gardening enthusiast. The belated family reunion with all its new relationships, is never less than surprising. Moore, Bening and Ruffalo all deliver endearingly quirky comic performances and with snappy, realistic dialogue and a nonchalantly breezy script by director Lisa Cholodenko and co-writer Stuart Blumberg, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT is an intelligent, thoughtful and warm comedy of modern life.top

THE MAID (15)

(Chile/Mexico 2009) dir. Sebastián Silva 95m. Subtitles. Digital.
Catalina Saavedra, Claudia Celedón, Mariana Loyola, Alejandro Goic,
Anita Reeves, Delna Guzmán.

An entertaining and fascinating mix of psychological thriller, poignant human drama and dark comedy, THE MAID also boasts a startling denouement and an outstanding central performance from Catalina Saavedra as Raquel. She's the live-in maid, a quiet and ungainly 41-year-old from a remote village who's spent most of her life looking after an upper-class Chilean couple and bringing up their four children. But when her considerate, liberal employers decide that she is overworked and needs some additional help, chaos, complications and confusion quickly follow as Raquel declares war on both family and new arrivals.top

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE (15)

(Mexico 2009) dir. Jorge Michel Grau. 89m. Subtitles. Digital.
Francisco Barreiro, Alan Chavez, Paulina Gaitan, Carmen Beato, Jorge Zarate, Esteban Soberanes.

There is much food for thought in writer/director Jorge Michel Grau's dark and bloody tale of a dysfunctional family in present day Mexico City where, in the words of one official, "You'd be surprised how many people eat each other." After the death of their father, his three children must break out of their previously sheltered lives to find the next meal or the family will die. Their task is not made any easier by their wide-eyed mother's fixation with her late husband's taste for prostitutes. At the same time a pair of dumb cops are investigating a series of murders. This very original mix of suspense thriller, classic horror and social commentary results in a very dark tale of familial complexities. A sly sense of humour aids the digestion.top

THE ILLUSIONIST (PG)

(UK/France 2010) dir. Sylvain Chomet 80m. Digital.
Edith Rankin, Eilidh Rankin, Jean-Claude Donda.

Based on an unproduced script by Jacques Tati, this is animator Sylvain Chomet’s long-waited follow-up to 2003’s BELLEVILLE RENDEZ-VOUS. 1950's Paris and an old-fashioned Parisian music-hall conjurer Tatischeff (Tati's real name) is struggling to find work. He leaves France and finds himself in Scotland with a new assistant, a naive young girl fresh out of a Scottish fishing village who regards him as a real-life magician, but the real magic is still to come. A beautifully observed and realised animated treasure.top

UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (12A)

(Thailand/UK/France/Germany/Spain/Netherlands 2010) dir. Apichatpong Weerasethakul 113m. Subtitles. Digital.
Sakda Kaewbuadee, Jenjira Pongpas.

Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, Thai director Weerasethakul continues to challenge traditional notions of time and space. As Uncle Boonmee lies on his deathbed, key figures from his life and imagination come to visit in the form of ghosts and other manifestations. As these mythical figures swim in and out of the darkness Boonmee is calmed by the mysterious and mesmerising flow of reincarnation that pulses through the film. Unsurprisingly, but itself full of surprises (the unhappy princess and the catfish sequence particularly so) this is one of the most original and moving movies of the year: visionary, mysterious, dreamlike, gentle, quiet, magical.top

THE AMERICAN (15)

(US 2010) dir. Anton Corbijn 105m. Digital.
George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli, Johan Leysen.

The ultra cool, stylish tradition of classic European crime dramas lives on in Anton Corbijn's (CONTROL) existential thriller, based on novelist Martin Booth's 'A Very Private Gentleman'. George Clooney is at his steeliest playing a professional assassin who realises that he is now the target and that it's time to retire. But there's one final job to be done and whilst awaiting instructions in rural Italy he encounters two of the locals, a priest who takes an interest in his sinful life, and a prostitute who introduces him to such alien concepts as humanity and emotions. With its terrific third act twist and director Corbijn photographer's eye, THE AMERICAN is as carefully and efficiently assembled for maximum impact as an assassin's rifle.top
