I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG (12A)

(France 2008) dir. Philippe Claudel 117m. Subtitles. Digital.
Kristin Scott Thomas, Elsa Zylberstein, Serge Hazanavicius, Laurent Grévill, Frédéric Pierrot.

Philippe Claudel's sublime drama about pain and healing is a beautiful mix of intelligence and compassion topped by a mesmerising performance by Kristin Scott Thomas. In a sleepy French provincial town curiosity abounds when Juliette, who has just served a 15 year prison sentence (for a crime considered 'a heinous offense against nature'), comes to stay with her estranged sister Lea and her husband. As Juliette's past is gradually and suspensefully revealed, families and secrets are explored alongside the social prejudices of the local bourgeoisie. A final revelation from the past challenges the future and lifts the film into a class of its own.

After their monumental success with NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN Joel and Ethan Coen return to their black comedy roots with a back-stabbing, double-crossing, absurdist caper movie in which a group of impulsive idiots left to their own devices leave behind a trail of bloodshed and bewilderment with every move they make. Forced out of his C.I.A. analyst job due to excessive drinking, Osborne (John Malkovich) is ready to deal with his memoirs and his bitter wife (Tilda Swinton). When a CD copy of the rough draft ends up on the locker room floor of a fitness center, employees Chad (Brad Pitt) and Linda (Frances McDormand) think they've found a pile of government secrets and decide to take up blackmail. Also in the mix is paranoid sex-toy enthusiast Harry (George Clooney), a Treasury agent who's cheating on both his wife and mistress, who's Osborne's wife... With a sense of devious comic timing that can veer off into horror or hilarity, the Coens are up to their old tricks and the result is an intoxicating delight.

THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX• TUE 18 Nov 1.00

THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX (*)

(Germany 2008) dir. Uli Edel 149m. Subtitles. Digital.
Martina Gedeck, Moritz Bleibtreu, Johanna Wokalek, Bruno Ganz, Simon Licht, Jan Josef Liefers.

The Red Army Faction, popularly known as The Baader Meinhof Gang, carried out bombings, kidnappings and assassinations throughout the 1970s and '80s in opposition to the West German establishment and American imperialism. Their aim was to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means that spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. Based on Stefan Aust's definitive book about the group, adapted by DOWNFALL screenwriter Bernd Eichinger, and directed by Uli Edel, THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX intelligently combines an exciting real life political thriller scenario with a fascinating insight into a contradictory mentality prepared to murder the innocent in the name of democracy and justice. Moritz Bleibtreu and Martina Gedeck, as Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, lead an exceptional cast of young German actors, while veteran Bruno Ganz gives another powerful performance as the man who understands them best but is ironically also their hunter: German police chief Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows that he's only dealing with the tip of the iceberg...

WALTZ WITH BASHIR• THUR 4 Dec 1.00

WALTZ WITH BASHIR (18)

(Israel/Germany/France 2008) dir. Ari Folman 90m. Digital.
Voices of: Ari Folman, Boaz Rein Buskila, Ori Sivan, Ron Ben-Yishari, Ronny Dayag, Dror Harazi.

Cutting edge animation that is as visually bold and original as it is politically explosive and rewarding. Director Ari Folman, triggered by an old Army colleague's recurring nightmare, attempts to remember his experiences in the Israeli army during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Having repressed his own memories of that conflict, he sets out to interview old friends, veterans from around the world, and even psychotherapists to help him regain what he has lost. There are no scenes of heroism; battles are seen as short, chaotic and terrifying skirmishes, many of them tragic mistakes. This is a world of clouded visions, uncertain memories and tortured dreams. Uniquely, WALTZ WITH BASHIR is both a stunning piece of documentary and a superb piece of animation.
