FRI 31 Oct • Halloween Late Show
NIGHT OF THE DEMON (PG) 11.15pm
(UK 1957) dir. Jacques Tourneur 92m.
Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins, Niall MacGinnis.
In one of the great supernatural horror thrillers of the 1950s, Jacques Tourneur, director of such eerie classics as the original CAT PEOPLE, creates another subtle masterpiece of menacing atmosphere and sheer terror. Based on the M.R. James story "Casting the Runes," it's a tale built around the notion that the black arts--particularly the use of ancient runic symbols-- can summon a deadly beast from hell. Determined to debunk the notion, a stubborn sceptic confronts a genteel but powerful occultist.
Ochre Works (underneath the Vortex) is creating a Hallowe'en Cocktail to celebrate. The cafe will be open to 2am so if you don't make it before the film, why not head there afterwards for a late night tipple - if you're not too traumatised - or needed at the coven.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE (12A)
(UK 2008) dir. Marc Forster 106m. Digital.
Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench, Gemma Arterton.
Bond is back and still nobody's doing it better! Daniel Craig reprises the role that won him critical acclaim and the world's favourite secret agent legions of new fans. It's number 22 but the first direct sequel, picking up the storyline shortly after the end of CASINO ROYALE. After being betrayed by the love of his life, 007 must now pursue the truth while avoiding personal vendettas. But his journey is far from what he imagines, as he finds himself working against the British government and the CIA and being chased around the world (Panama, Chile, Italy and Austria). Mathieu Amalric (THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY) joins the memorable gallery of Bond villains but he's more corporate than grotesque, posing as an environmentalist whilst conspiring to take total control of the world's water supply. It could well be 007's most dangerous, challenging and thrilling adventure yet!

SAT 15 Nov • Kinosound presents
THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (PG) 11.30pm
(Germany 1920) dir. Robert Weine 72m. Digital.
Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss, Lil Dagover.
With live original score by MINIMA.
Inspired by an unsolved murder in a German fairground, this extraordinary film has become a cinematic icon. The bizarre Dr Caligari sends his performing sleepwalker Cesare out to commit murder, in a town entirely distorted by madness. Famous for its crazily expressionist sets, which seem about to fall in on themselves, and the haunting image of Conrad Veidt as Cesare; this screening is accompanied live by Minima, an acclaimed four-piece consisting of guitars, drums and cello.
