R I O   C L A S S I C   M A T I N E E S

The Rio’s monthly Classic Matinees usually take place on the first or second Wednesday of the month (April’s screening being on the third Wednesday is an exception). There is an interval for every film, and extra seating is provided in the foyer. We are delighted that thanks to funding from the Bridge House Trust we are able to offer free admission and tea and cake for the Over 60’s. Please come along and enjoy a film and a chat!

These screenings are also open to everyone else at normal weekday matinee ticket prices.

THE ITALIAN JOB• Wed 23 Apr 2.30

Michael Caine 75th birthday tribute

THE ITALIAN JOB (PG)

(UK 1969) dir. Peter Collinson 99m.
Michael Caine, Noel Coward, Benny Hill, Raf Vallone.

What better way to wish a Happy 75th Birthday to one of our greatest movie stars than to enjoy a cult classic from the 60's, with the craziest car chase in cinema history and a real cliff hanger finale. Recently released from prison, Charlie Croker takes on one more 'job' – stealing a $4m shipment of gold from a Turin bank. The trouble is, with the cops and the Mafia on his tail, Charlie finds that grabbing the money is kid's stuff compared to getting away with it...

CLOSING THE RING• Wed 14 May 2.30

CLOSING THE RING (12A)

(UK/Canada/USA 2007) dir. Richard Attenborough 118m.
Shirley Maclaine, Christopher Plummer, Mischa Barton.

A moving story spanning the decades between World War Two and the present day. Ireland, 1943: a dying airman gives a ring to a local townsperson to return to his girlfriend in the USA. Fifty years later the ring is found, and the finder is determined to uncover the history behind it. An emotional, time-travelling romance with fine performances from a starry cast.
