TEN CANOES (15)
(Australia 2006) dir. Rolf de Heer & Peter Djigirr 92m. Digital.
Crusoe Kurddal, David Gulpilil, Jamie Gulpilil, Richard Birrinbirrin, Peter Djigirr.
A marvellous journey into the meandering byways of Aboriginal storytelling, and winner of Jury Prize at Cannes.
Spinning a myth nearly a thousand years old with sharp comedy and astute observations, this is also the first all-aboriginal Australian film. Our narrator David Gulpilil first relates the story of his creation, then goes back to the beginnings of tribal time and a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of coveting another man's wife. The film is shot beautifully, the luminous greens and browns of the swamp environment combining with stylish black and white sequences. Blessed with rich humour and some of the best lines heard in years, this enchanting film gives us a fascinating encounter with a culture whose inner workings many of us will not have seen before. An unmissable one-of-a-kind. |

JINDABYNE (15)
(Australia 2006) dir. Ray Lawrence 124m.
Laura Linney Gabriel Byrne Chris Haywood Deborra-Lee Furness John Howard.
This stunning psychological thriller from Ray Lawrence, director of LANTANA, is a complex tapestry of moral threads.
Based on a short story by Raymond Carver, it tells of Stewart Kane, an Irishman living in the Australian town of Jindabyne who goes on a fishing trip in isolated hill country with friends, only to discover the body of a murdered girl in the river. Rather than return to the town immediately, the men continue fishing and report their gruesome find days later. This causes repercussions for the group, particularly Stewart when his wife Claire discovers her husband's actions. Her determination to uncover the truth makes for a quietly riveting psychological drama, probing the mysterious workings of the human heart. Richly atmospheric, with the dramatic setting of the Australian outback and impeccable performances, Jindabyne is an often deeply disturbing, unforgettable film.

SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY (12A)
(Germany/US 2005) dir. Sydney Pollack 84m. Documentary. Digital.
Frank Gehry, Sydney Pollack, Craig Webb, Edwin Chan, Dennis Hopper, Julian Schnabel, Bob Geldof, Ed Ruscha, Hal Foster, Michael Ovitz, Michael Eisner, Milton Wexler.
A warm and observant working portrait of architect Frank Gehry, from award-winning director Sydney Pollack.
Even if you know nothing of Gehry's designs, you'll be immediately and completely engrossed in this story. Showing the architect with trusted assistants, sketching his design fantasies (never using computers himself), painstakingly assembling models until he finalises his ideas for new, extraordinary buildings, we then visit the finished masterpieces. The film captures those moments when spontaneous ideas collide with practical concerns and shows a man who has dared to dream about buildings that seem to defy gravity, such as the awesome Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, with its walls that look like large billowing sails. The film also includes glowing comments from celebrities fans of Gehry such as Bob Geldof and Dennis Hopper. Enjoyable and insightful.

18 short stories about relationships set in Paris from a host of internationally acclaimed directors and actors.
Love in all its forms is the subject of these short films made by an assortment of international directors who bring individual vision to a collective love letter to the French capital. Most of the directors have written their own pieces, and they range from whimsical to romantic, to dramatic and tragic. Steve Buscemi is hilarious in the Coen brothers' piece and Cuarón's single take is technically audacious, while Alexander Payne's bittersweet finale soars with a small but profound intimate personal triumph. With modestly but richly sculpted pieces, it's a sublime visit to the city of lights and love.
