LONDON TO BRIGHTON (18) 2.00 & 11.15pm
(UK 2006) dir. Paul Andrew Williams 86m.
Lorraine Stanley, Georgia Groome, Sam Spruell, Nathan Constance.
A gripping and dark look at 24 hours in the life of a prostitute and a young runaway, fleeing to Brighton in a desperate attempt to save their own lives. As a first feature, made on a shoe-string budget, and cast with relative unknowns, it demonstrates just what British cinema is capable of when it refuses to play safe. |

(US 1946) dir. Michael Curtiz 102m.
Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Dooley Wilson, Curt Bois.
Haven’t got Valentine’s day sorted out yet? Disgraceful. But don’t worry, the Rio is coming to your rescue. What better way to spend your evening than watching CASABLANCA and enjoying a glass of fizz? Voted the most romantic film of all time by a TCM poll, this is also surely one of the greatest films ever made. Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband, Czech freedom fighter Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), wander into Rick's Cafe in Casablanca. The two are on the run from the Nazis, and have come to the American-owned nightspot to lie low. Little does Ilsa know that the cafe is run by Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), the one true love of her life. When the two see each other, sparks fly, and memories of an enchanted time in Paris come flooding back.

WITHNAIL & I (15) 11.15pm
(UK 1987) dir Bruce Robinson 107m.
Richard E Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown, Michael Elphick.
This classic British comedy details the misadventures of two 'resting' actors in 1969: the flamboyant and alcoholic Withnail and 'I', his more level-headed friend and the movie's narrator. Ailing and seemingly perpetually unemployed, they decide to take a holiday in the countryside, securing a country cottage belonging to Uncle Monty… WITHNAIL & I is a cult comedy classic. Yet for all the glorious bad behaviour and gleeful antics, it's profoundly melancholic; the ending, one of the most moving ever seared into celluloid.
