CineSchool Free Screenings for Schools at the Rio Cinema

Free screenings for schools are back at the Rio with a range of films to support your curriculum, including the ever-popular much-requested BULLET BOY, which was filmed in Hackney. All screenings will be FREE of charge to students and teachers and will offer a variety of cinematic experiences that go beyond the blockbuster. The films chosen aim to expand and enrich students' experience and appreciation of film. Some of the screenings will be followed by discussions or masterclasses.

Thursday 22 June 10am
BULLET BOYBULLET BOY (15) dir. Saul Dibb 89m
Relevant to English, Media Studies, Film Studies & Citizenship
Ricky is just out of a young offenders institute, heading home to Hackney and determined to go straight. Will he manage to break the cycle of violence and prevent his younger brother from following in his footsteps? Evocatively filmed in East London, and with terrific performances throughout, the film is a striking portrait of two black boys growing up in inner city London, a pertinent social drama, and a timely damning of gun crime and its devastating effects.
Followed by a Masterclass on the process of film classification, from BBFC examiner John Dyer [45 mins]

Thursday 29 June 10am
CRASHCRASH (15) dir. Paul Haggis 113m
Relevant to English, Media Studies & Citizenship
For two days in Los Angeles, a racially and economically diverse group of people pursue lives that collide with one another in unexpected ways. These interactions are always interesting, and sometimes quite unsettling. The film explores racial issues in modern America and challenges your ability to judge books by their covers.

Thursday 6 July 10am
TSOTSI TSOTSI (15)dir. Gavin Hood 94m
Relevant to English, Media Studies & Citizenship
Set amidst the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto - where survival is the primary objective - TSOTSI traces six days in the life of a ruthless young gang leader who ends up caring for a baby accidentally kidnapped during a car-jacking.
Followed by a discussion on the film by freelance writer and journalist Jerome Monahan [30 mins]

Thursday 13 July 10am
HOTEL RWANDAHOTEL RWANDA (12A) dir. Terry George 121m
Relevant to History & Citizenship
Ten years ago some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind took place in the country of Rwanda - and in an era of high-speed communication and round the clock news, the events went almost unnoticed by the rest of the world. In only three months, one million people were brutally murdered. In the face of these unspeakable actions, an ordinary man summons extraordinary courage to save the lives of over a thousand helpless refugees, by granting them shelter in the hotel he manages.

Introduced by Richard Riddell, Head of Education, Amnesty International UK [15 mins] Followed by a discussion on the film [25 mins]

RIO TAPE-SLIDE PROJECT

The Rio, in conjunction with Hackney Community College, runs a popular Tape-Slide course in the basement studio, on Fridays 10am - 3pm.

  • Are you interested in photography, film video or installation?
  • Do you have ideas you would like to visually explore, and have screened at the Rio?
  • With or without previous experience, this is the course for you.

Tape-Slide can be compared to film, but has its own elegance and power. It combines projected images with a programmed or live soundtrack. Tape-Slide shows are regularly seen at exhibitions, clubs, conferences, and in theatre/dance performances.

The RIO TAPE-SLIDE COURSE will develop your understanding of images, storytelling, storyboarding, sound mixing, and the relationship between image and soundtrack. It also provides an opportunity to have your work screened publicly in 2006.

You will be offered professional technical and critical guidance, and be encouraged to develop and express your own ideas.

Graduates have used the experience gained at the Rio to develop/further their careers, or gain places in higher education.

  • All facilities are available on site
  • Course accredited by the London Open College Network (LOCN)
  • The Rio Tape-Slide Project is jointly run by the Rio Cinema and Hackney Community College. (Concessionary fee £7.00 per term)
