| RIO TAPE-SLIDE PROJECT
The Rio, in conjunction with Hackney Community College, runs a popular Tape-Slide
course in the basement studio, on Fridays 10am - 3pm.
- Are you interested in photography, film
video or installation?
- Do you have ideas you would like to visually
explore, and have screened at the Rio?
- With or without previous experience, this
is the course for you.
Tape-Slide can be compared to film, but has its own elegance and power. It
combines projected images with a programmed or live soundtrack. Tape-Slide shows
are regularly seen at exhibitions, clubs, conferences, and in theatre/ dance
performances.
The RIO TAPE-SLIDE COURSE will develop
your understanding of images, storytelling, storyboarding, sound
mixing, and the relationship between image and soundtrack. It
also provides an opportunity to have your work screened publicly
in 2005.
You will be offered professional technical
and critical guidance, and be encouraged to develop and express
your own ideas.
Graduates have used the experience gained
at the Rio to develop/ further their careers, or gain places
in higher education. Past work has been selected for the London
Film Festival.
- All facilities are available on
site
- Course accredited by the London Open College
Network (LOCN)
- The Rio Tape-Slide Project is jointly
run by the Rio Cinema and Hackney Community College. (Concessionary
fee £7.00 per term)

To encourage an interactive experience, the Rio will wherever
possible provide session leaders to introduce the films and chair
short discussions afterwards.
2) SHADOW PUPPETS FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
Where
did the first storytelling come from?
Shadow puppetry could be imagined to come from the days of caveman
paintings and the paintings themselves were just what was left behind
from the Storytelling shadows they cast against the walls of the
cave.
Filmmaking itself incorporates all of the arts and stories which
came before.
So how better to learn the craft of filmmaking than through using
shadow puppetry.
The workshop is for children from 9 to 16 years of age and will
provide an introduction to the filmmaking process – from finding
the story, making the puppets, structuring the ideas, shooting the
film, making the soundtrack, editing and finally watching the finished
film on the big screen.
The course will be run by Damian Barnecutt, a recent National
Film & Television School graduate, and other industry professionals
will be there to help.
The workshops will take place from Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 February
in the Rio basement from 10am to 5pm daily.
The whole course costs just £5. Priority will be given to
Hackney residents. Residents of other boroughs are welcome to apply
and will be offered any remaining places. The Rio basement is fully
accessible.
Entry to the course is by a simple application on the reverse
of this form and must be received by the Rio Cinema no later than
12 noon on 7 February. We will contact successful applicants no
later than the 9 February and the course fee of £5 will be
payable on the first day of the workshop.
A do it yourself step-by-step filmmaking shadow puppetry workshop
pack, will also be available on the Rio web site to download at
the beginning of the scheduled shadow puppets filmmaking workshop.

6) In-school media workshops
These will be provided by the Rio/Community College tape Slide
tutor, Rob Rainbow and aim to provide simple activities that take
place in lesson time. The sessions are for KS3 children and will
involve multi disciplinary creative activities that aim to engage
students and help them to create cinematic elements relevant to
their experience. Techniques used will involve accessible time based
activities such as flick books, spoken and sampled audio recordings,
mini disc, and rostrum dv stop frame, and will draw on students’
existing schoolwork, hobbies and interests. These approaches will
challenge students expectations and produce sympathetic material
quickly. Gathered elements will inform and feature in production
of a short film showing the animated results. Opportunities will
also be explored for developing work generated in the classroom
in subsequent in depth sessions at the Rio with a view to creating
a piece to be screened in the cinema at the end of the programme.
For more information, please telephone Rob at the Rio on Friday
between 10am and 3pm or email: tapeslide@th3village.org
